Japanese movie posters: Casino Royale (B1 size)

Newly in — one of three styles for Casino Royale. Note that this is in the scarcer B1 size (~29″ x 41″). Slightly larger than a standard US one sheet for those that are not familiar with the sizes.

Post is mint and double sided.

Japanese movie posters: Little Miss Sunshine (B1 size)

There are at least two variants for Little Miss Sunshine, at least in the larger B1 size. They are fairly similar except that this one features portraits of the cast.

This is a hard poster to find even though the movie recently came out. I’m trying to pick these new releases up as soon as I can.

Japanese movie posters: The Trip

I acquired this poster this year, and I can’t say that I had been looking for it. I’ve previously seen and owned another B2 design for this film, as well as the 2 panel (I have another 2 panel coming very soon). But this one — I had never even seen an image of before, so when it was offered to me I knew I had to pick it up.

Certainly the art on this Japanese poster fits with the film! A very cool and rare piece.

Japanese movie posters: La Chinoise (B1 size R80s)

This isn’t a new addition to my collection, but it is such a cool piece regardless. It’s an 80′s re-release for La Chinoise and is pretty scarce. I have seen only three, one of which had a huge tear in it. For a poster from the 80′s that is just not too many sightings over a period of eight years. And I am always actively searching for these.

Some have commented that the poster is boring because of the large red field. I think it’s brilliant. One of my favorites.

Dark Knight (Heath Ledger as Joker) Advance screening B1 Japanese movie poster

I’m not a rabid Batfan and I am apparently in the minority in saying that I think the first Nolan film is the better of the two. End of disclaimer. This poster is really interesting — first off, this is the first time that I’ve seen this setup where the top and bottom of a single poster are meant for two different openings. One part (you can’t really say top or bottom since the poster is largely symmetrical, with credits on both sides) is for a limited advance screening on August 2/3, while the other part is for the wide release of August 9. The poster was meant to be folded or cut at the middle for each respective release — how do we know this? The poster was lightly mechanically scored on the back to facilitate this action.

But what I really like is the unusual paper. It is thick and very very shiny. Glossy, almost to the level of new car paint. You can see some reflections in the right side of the picture. Cool poster.

500 Japanese posters on auction at emovieposter.com

Bruce Hershenson has 500 Japanese posters on auction right now, ending next Tuesday.

Japanese movie posters at emovieposter.com

For those that don’t know emovieposter.com, the site is run by Bruce Hershenson and is a great operation. Bruce is one of the “good guys” in the hobby and I actually met him last year and toured his facility and met some of his staff. And it is a real FACILITY — I think it’s about 5000 square feet and jammed to the gills with posters.

Anyway, if you go through the auctions this week there are some interesting items in there.

Valuable information for collectors

No additional pictures today, just an update on some additional content I have planned. I realize there is a need for more information about certain subjects, so in addition to updates on new posters I will be publishing the following:

  • Authentication: Lost in Translation B2 Japanese movie poster vs. A FAKE
  • Guide to packing and shipping posters — with pictures**
  • Taking pictures of your posters

** I realize that this is one of the hallmarks of my service — great packing — and that competitors may take my advice. Two thoughts on that — first, it is expensive and a pain to pack the way I do, so I doubt anyone in this business would try to copy my methods. Second, if anyone duplicates my shipping methods then that’s all the good, as it means more posters will survive shipping in general. I don’t care who buys/sells/ships — if posters stay in better condition then that is a positive result.

If you have more ideas on content that might be interesting and/or useful, I’m all ears. Email me at mail _AT_ posterdemic.com

L’Avventura Japanese B2 movie poster

I recently received this one from Japan. Featuring a fantastic image of Monica Vitti, I think it is probably the second best design for Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura after the French 1 panel.

Probably off to get linen-backed by Vintage Movie Art…. Hope you enjoy having a look.

Les Plus Belles Escroqueries du Monde Japanese movie poster

Another beauty from this rare title. Yes, the tatekan is SOLD, but this B2 is still available.

I’m still contemplating putting this one on linen and making it part of the permanent collection. It’s such a cool piece. LOVE IT.

Uchu daikaiju Girara / X from Outer Space Japanese B2 movie poster

This is a very rare poster. Girara is just a very tough poster… I have only seen two of these in the last eight years, perhaps three. And only one time have I seen the two panel, and I bought and sold it to a collector in Europe.

This one is mounted on linen courtesy of Vintage Movie Art in Vancouver B.C.

This Girara B2 Japanese movie poster is available for $575 from posterdemic.com. Email us for details.

My Own Private Idaho Japanese movie poster

I got this poster last month and it’s pretty interesting. I have to admit I’m not that familiar with the art on this title, but I don’t think I’ve seen this on any other poster. Additionally interesting is that I am quite confident that this is a theatrical poster since I bought it from a collection of 100% authentic theatrical posters, but it is in English instead of Japanese and doesn’t have an Eirin mark.

If anyone knows more about this one I’m all ears.

Kill Bill 2 Death List B1 size Japanese movie poster

This poster is right up there with the rarest of Kill Bill posters. From KB 2, this is the Death List obviously, and I only know of two other copies. Printed on matte paper and in the B1 size (~29″ x 40″).

Available from posterdemic.com for $1,750 shipped.

Just in: Les Plus Belles Escroqueries du Monde 2 panel Japanese movie poster featuring Mie Hama aka “Kissy Suzuki”

This is the only one of these I’ve ever seen. Actually, I can’t say I’ve seen too many posters AT ALL from any country from this movie. I’d be happy if someone would write to me and tell me if it’s any good — it IS a Jean-Luc Godard film right? And it features Catherine Deneuve, among others…

Notably Mie Hama, provocatively and prominently featured on this 2 panel poster from 1964. Now, for those that do not know how big Japanese two panels are, they are two B2 size (~20″ x 29″) posters stacked one on top of the other. So in total this poster stands almost five feet tall.

Mie Hama is a famous actress in Japan and was the first Asian woman to appear in Playboy! But most who know her here know her as “Kissy Suzuki“, Sean Connery‘s “bride” in You Only Live Twice. She starred in 70 movies before that role though! Here’s a link to a great interview with Mie Hama.

A very rare poster and an interesting crossroads of some important film people.

POSTER IS SOLD.

Just in: Brigitte Bardot – La Bride Sur Le Cou original Japanese 2 panel movie poster

Featuring what I would say is one of the most beautiful/sexy portraits of Brigitte Bardot on a poster, this is the scarce 2 panel for La Bride Sur Le Cou aka Only For Love aka Please, Not Now! If this didn’t get you into the theater in 1961, I don’t know what would.

More on this title later.

Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Dreamers” Japanese B2 size movie poster

A beautiful poster that is quite scarce, and on nice matte stock as well. Can’t beat that. As time goes on (released in ’03), these small releases get very very tough to find. The strong yen and dying poster shops don’t help matters either. The supply of Japanese posters from dealers and collectors continues to dry up.

Where can I find Japanese movie posters for sale? Posterdemic of course!

Lost in Translation B2 size original Japanese movie poster

Another one I have been after for quite a long time — the elusive Lost in Translation Japanese B2. Yes, I would love a B1, but this B2 is pretty rare indeed. I’ve only seen a handful. This one is excellent — no folds, not even any ‘waves’ as we so often see in B2′s, and on thick matte stock. Lovely.

Kill Bill 2 Pink Bride Japanese B1 size movie poster

Back from vacation and my family emergency… I thought I’d start back with an earthshattering post.

After looking for this poster for literally years, I finally got it. Anyone who knows Kill Bill will appreciate how difficult it is to find one of these… i.e., nearly impossible. This was the only one available and I don’t expect to find another for a long long time, if ever.
POSTER IS SOLD

I also have the Darryl Hannah version from the same set of four and will post that one later.

More to come, I have many other nice pieces that came in over the last few weeks.

Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs 2 panel (tatekan) Japanese movie poster

Very rare Japanese 2 panel movie poster for Miki Sugimoto’s Zero Woman: Red Handcuffs (Zeroka no onna: Akai wappa) — actually the only one of these I have ever seen. I have only seen the B2 for this perhaps twice.

I’ve had this tatekan for a while but it has been tucked away. I’m thinking about putting it on linen, but haven’t decided yet. I’m accepting offers on this; for the ultimate Pink Violence collector.

On Any Sunday Japanese B1 movie poster

An extremely rare poster, featuring art seen on no other version I am aware of and in B1 size. I haven’t seen this art on any B2 either. This is the only one I have seen and I don’t expect to see another.

Not for sale except for a very unreasonable offer.

Here and gone: Amelie B2 red version Japanese movie poster

Well, I wrote about this one in my inventory update, and a smart surfer emailed me to ask if it was in yet. I didn’t have time to post it for sale on www.posterdemic.com as it only just arrived a few days ago, but now it is sold and off to its new home. I can’t keep these around for too long…

Anyway, I did have time to snap a pic, so you can see what the original generally looks like. As you probably are aware, this poster has been counterfeited and repro’ed many times over, so you have to know what to look for. It’s a classic and it seems a lot of people want it.

Time to work on getting another one. Maybe this time I’ll have an opportunity to post it for sale on the site! Or maybe not.

On the way: Bruce Brown’s Endless Summer Japanese B2 movie poster (!)

Endless Summer Japanese B2 movie poster

Endless Summer Japanese B2 movie poster

I am happy to report that I have a very welcome addition coming in: a Japanese B2 for Endless Summer, and it looks to be in fantastic condition.

It took me 5 years +/- to find this one after passing on one with a big tear on eBay about 5 years ago. Looks like with some patience that was the right decision. I have seen a grand total of three of these ever.

Here’s a bad picture, I’ll post another once it arrives.

This just in today: Blue Crush special Japanese B1 size movie poster

Probably only (Japanese) movie poster geeks will understand, but this poster is just unbelievable. 1) Different art from anything I’ve seen 2) B1 size 3) Definitely theatrical, as it has the Eirin mark 4) The oval and rectangles at the bottom right not only look like “surf brand” stickers, THEY ARE STICKERS, presumably meant to be taken off the poster and taken home?? Crazy.

Not for sale at this point, sorry.

Added today: Pan’s Labyrinth Japanese movie poster (B1 size)

In the Mood for Love B1 Japanese movie poster – Wong Kar Wai

Here’s a great new recent arrival. This one is very special and I have been looking for it for quite a while in good condition. It is doubly striking (literally) since it is in the rare B1 size (29″ x 40″).
